MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Feb. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard architectures, processors and analog IP for digital consumer, home networking, wireless, communications and business applications, today announced that its MIPS32(R) 1004K(TM) Coherent Processing System (CPS), the industry's first embedded multi-threaded, multiprocessor licensable IP core, was named a finalist in the prestigious annual Innovation Awards from EDN Magazine. Instituted in 1990, the Innovation Awards honor the people, products, and technologies that have shaped the semiconductor industry over the past year.
"We are pleased that EDN's editors have selected the 1004K CPS as a finalist in the prestigious Innovation Awards competition," said Brad Holtzinger, vice president of worldwide sales and corporate marketing, MIPS Technologies. "This is yet another honor in a series of recent accolades given to the 1004K CPS, reflecting an understanding among technologists of the merits of our multi-core technology. Industry standard benchmark results and feedback from customers are clearly demonstrating that the combination of multi-threading and multiprocessing provides significant performance benefits."
During the month of February, EDN's worldwide audience of electronics engineers and engineering managers will use an online ballot to select the ultimate winners from among the finalists. EDN's editorial staff and Editorial Advisory Board also take part in determining the final winners. Readers are encouraged to visit http://www.EDN.com/innovation to review each of the nominees. Winners will be announced at a dinner and awards ceremony on March 30, 2009, in San Jose, Calif.
The 1004K CPS provides among the best performance efficiency and configurability in a multiprocessing system -- up to four single- or multi- threaded processors integrated with advanced system coherency. The 1004K coherent processing system helps lower SoC development costs since for many applications, fewer processors are needed than with other multiprocessor solutions. Multi-threading in each CPU provides significant performance gains over single-threaded multiprocessor offerings. A wide array of vertical applications such as digital home entertainment, home networking and office automation are poised to benefit from coherent multiprocessing with multi- threading. The 1004K CPS is available in two versions: the 1004Kc(TM) using integer cores, and the 1004Kf(TM) with a floating point unit in each core.
